Day 18 (two paintings today) – “Hard as Nails” & “Purple Rain Migrant Madonna, otherwise known as Purple Haze”

I started this painting at about 12 am this morning and managed to smudge the face and needed to start over again, so it wasn’t quick. I felt bad too, because the first version is always bests; yet I never let them rest, resulting in overworked pieces. Finally done with it, SHE (and I) needed a total attitude adjustment by the look on her face — so I gave her a headress (of sorts) to go with her “Hard as Nails” result.  She’s a bit lumpy in the face – perhaps the root of that chip on her shoulder — but extraordinary, nonetheless.

At about 2 am, as I started cleaning the studio to retreat from two mediocre paintings, I saw the orange paint tube and a GREAT, partially metallic gold smeared, 21 by 12 inch board… So I thought, “Why NOT? I’m exhausted, so why not stay up all night!” Worth it, I finally found my flow in the last leg of what ended up being a 24 hour work day — and the last piece is the best of two calendar days’. I love her and hope you do, too.

She was literally conceived and born in the sink, (inset photo shows her first immaculate breaths) where I scraped and reused the bits of paint from my Palette with a metal paint  scraper and lots of water (and my tube of orange paint).  I scraped and smeared, and smeared and scraped, until quite quickly, a “Migrant Madonna” emerged in a dreamy background of blue/aqua/”PURPLE HAZE (pardon the drug reference but I love this Jimmie Hendrix song!) (hmmm, a song link is in order) — purple haze … Then Purple Rain (by Prince) came to mind; so, hence, the final title is a play on all three: “Rainy Day Migrant Madonna, otherwise known as Purple Haze”

Stubborn persistence had great result — well worth my achy all over, painful eye-strained physical status when I walked through the door (home sweet home) to dog Zoe (jumping two feet off the ground) and Mom (just awake and up for coffee time and our crossword collaboration).

I’m writing this after at dusk on the same painting day; rested and lying down, after a rainy day nap, with lost reading glasses and typos inevitable (pardon), I present to you “Rainy Day Migrant Madonna, otherwise known as Purple Haze”! Love her (madly) — oh no, not another song… Still tired, apparently.

Love to all. 5:59 pm now.  Ready to watch the end of a movie (not my fave but not the point) with mom after too solitary a day…  Here she is again:
